SMS Course Description

The FESWMS/RMA2 training course is designed for beginning and experienced hydraulic engineers who want to learn how to use automatic mesh generation tools in combination with proven analytical software to perform their two-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling projects. The training course teaches the fundamental concepts of the FESWMS and RMA2 models and how SMS can be used to assist the analytical process by automating the mesh generation and editing processes, boundary condition definitions, and mesh renumbering and checking procedures. The course also discusses the conceptual modeling tools provided by SMS for more automation of mesh generation. SMS also provides tools to visualize the flow fields and water surface elevations. Some knowledge of RMA2 or FESWMS models is helpful but not required. The SMS course will be a hands-on training opportunity. The training will feature real examples run by the student so the student can become familiar with the modeling process and the program features.

SMS Course Objectives

The 4-day training course on SMS covers the following:

  • 2-D Mesh generation tools
    • Triangulation
    • Geographic Information System Conceptual Modeling
    • Interactive mesh editing
      • Breaklines
      • Smoothing

Instructors

Dr. Alan Zundel.  Architect and director of the SMS interface development. Author of SMS reference manual and tutorials. Ph.D., Brigham Young University, 1994. Research Professor, Brigham Young University. Dr. Zundel has taught university level courses and several short courses in the area on hydraulic analysis and finite element modeling.

Darren Gonzales.  Civil Engineer. Primary developer of the SMS mesh module interfaces including RMA2, FESWMS, HIVEL2D, SED2D, RMA10, and the generic model interface. Mr. Gonzales has extensive experience with the two-dimensional hydrodynamic models interfaced through SMS.

Rusty Jones.  Civil Engineer. Rusty is one of the managers of the SMS development team at Brigham Young University. His experience includes several years of development of the SMS interface as well as use of SMS to develop two-dimensional hydrodynamic models.

About SMS

SMS - Surface-Water Modeling System. SMS is a graphical pre and postprocessor for 1D and 2D hydrodynamic modeling of complex river systems, lakes, estuaries and coastal systems. It includes interfaces for the finite-element analysis packages RMA2, RMA4, HIVEL2D, SED2D-WES, FESWMS and the one-dimensional step backwater profiler WSPRO. SMS also now includes interfaces for the ADCIRC, STWAVE and CGWAVE coastal models. Feature objects patterned after the ARC/INFO GIS data model are used to construct conceptual models that define the mesh domain and material zones. Boundary conditions and other parameters are assigned to the feature objects. A mesh can be automatically generated from the conceptual model using sophisticated mesh generation tools available in SMS. Materials and boundary conditions are automatically assigned to the appropriate mesh nodes or elements.
