SMS is a Windows graphical pre and postprocessor for hydrodynamic modeling. It includes interfaces for the
two-dimensional finite-element analysis packages, RMA2, SED2D (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers TABS-MD), and FESWMS (Federal Highway Administration).
SMS Hydrodynamic Analysis With a mesh constructed using SMS, the FESWMS or RMA2 software is used to compute flow velocities and
water-surface elevations at each mesh node, and the boundary between wet and dry regions in the model. Flow separations and eddy currents are accurately modeled. Both steady state and transient solutions can be computed.
From a flow solution, the RMA4 software can model contaminant transport and the SED2D code can model sediment transport.
SMS RMA2 SMS includes a model specific interface for the hydrodynamic analysis model RMA2. With a mesh constructed using
SMS, RMA2 computes flow velocities and water-surface elevations at each mesh node. It also computes the dynamic boundary between wet and dry regions in the model. Flow separations and eddy currents are accurately modeled. Both
steady state and transient solutions can be computed. RMA2 is part of the TABS modeling system. It has been used
extensively by the Army Corps of Engineers and their consultants. It supports multiple methods of handling wetting and drying situations and its output can be used by RMA4 and SED2D to model contaminant migration and sediment
transport problems.
SMS SED2D includes an interface to the newly rewritten and modernized SED2D-WES sediment transport model.
SED2D-WES replaces a previous model, STUDH, which was part of TABS-MD suite of software. SED2D-WES can be applied to clay or sand bed sediments where flow velocities can be considered two-dimensional in the horizontal plane. It
is useful for both deposition and erosion studies and, to a limited extent, for stream width studies. The program treats two
categories of sediment: noncohesive, which is referred to as sand, and cohesive which is referred to as clay. The program
utilizes the water-surface elevations and velocities generated by RMA2, and new bathymetry is output for iterative runs of RMA2 if significant scour or deposition occur.
SMS FESWMS SMS includes an interface for the hydrodynamic analysis model FESWMS. This model, developed for the Federal
Highway Administration, produces hydrodynamic solutions similar to RMA2. The modeling system can be used to simulate flow in water bodies that have irregular topography and geometrical features such as islands and highway
embankments. Flow over dams, weirs, and highway embankments, and through bridges, culverts, and gated openings can also be modeled. FESWMS can be used to model both sub- and super-critical flow conditions.
SMS Postprocessing
After the results are computed by one of the analytical models, the solution can be viewed graphically in SMS. Numerous
options are available for changing the display of the solution. Results also include an animation and flow visualization
algorithm. In addition, time-history plots can be generated for selected nodes to illustrate fluctuations in velocity and water-surface elevation.
