Course Description
ArcView GIS from ESRI is one of the most widely used geographic information systems in the world. Two new products were recently developed that
interface ArcView to MODFLOW models. The first is a Shapefile Import and Export wizard within the popular Groundwater Vistas software. The wizard that comes with Groundwater Vistas Version 2+ facilitates the
transfer of data to and from ArcView including attribute databases. An ArcView MODFLOW Extension was also recently developed to assist in creating MODFLOW input files and postprocessing MODFLOW results. Both
products are covered in this new seminar. The ArcView MODFLOW Extension is sold separately from Groundwater Vistas but is provided free to course participants.
You will learn strategies for assembling themes within ArcView GIS that will facilitate the development and calibration of groundwater models. With
proper design of the GIS, ArcView can serve as the repository of all model data. These data can then be transferred quickly to Groundwater Vistas to complete the model. This is particularly useful in documenting the
model and when major changes to the model design are required. Both the Shapefile Import & Export Wizard and the MODFLOW Extension assist in the transfer of information from ArcView to Groundwater Vistas.
A significant portion of the course is also devoted to producing layouts with ArcView to document the model results. Advanced topics along these
lines will include the use of EVS for 3D visualization and ESRI's Spatial Analyst extension. The course is taught by Mr. Jim Rumbaugh, an expert in groundwater modeling and author of Groundwater Vistas, and Mr. Eric
Phillips, an expert in GIS and information systems from CH2M Hill. This seminar is evenly split between lectures and hands-on sessions using both ArcView and Groundwater Vistas.
Instructors James Rumbaugh is a national leader in the field of groundwater modeling and has performed modeling studies in the US, Caribbean, and Europe. Jim was co-founder
of Geraghty & Miller's Modeling Group and Technical Director for Modeling Services until he left to start his own consulting firm. He is the Chairman of the ASTM task group funded by U.S. EPA to develop
standards for groundwater modeling practice and is now the Chairman of Subcommittee D18.21 on Groundwater and Vadose Zone Investigations. He has written some of the most popular groundwater modeling software in use
today including ModelCad and Groundwater Vistas. Jim has taught numerous groundwater modeling training courses to private industry and government clients.
ERIC PHILLIPS, is a GIS Analyst and Geographer with CH2M Hill, Inc. Mr. Phillips has more than 10 years of experience in GIS and information systems
with particular emphasis on groundwater and environmental resource projects, watershed delineation, data base design, browser and web based solutions, and 3D visualization. He is an expert at interfacing ArcView and
ArcInfo to groundwater models such as MODFLOW and CFEST and was instrumental in developing the interface between ArcView and EVS for 3D visualization.
Educational Level & CEUs
The course is intended for intermediate and experienced groundwater modelers with significant experience in the use of MODFLOW. Knowledge of the
Groundwater Vistas software will be helpful but not required. This course qualifies for 2.4 CEUs.
What You Receive with the Course
You will receive a complete copy of course notes and background information. You will also get a CD-ROM with course exercises and the PEST-LITE
calibration software. Course participants are eligible for a 30% discount on Groundwater Vistas and Stochastic Groundwater Vistas.
Enrollment To keep a low ratio of students to instructors, enrollment is limited to a maximum of 25 participants. If you plan to attend, please register early.
